I was searching for a friend yesterday, who I managed to find over here. And in doing so, I felt compelled to resurrect this blog.
So, there was an article in the Times yesterday, reporting on how the economic downturn is coinciding with two behavioural phenomena. Firstly, people buying the kinds of exotic foods they would otherwise have eaten at restaurants. Secondly, people sourcing the cheapest basics e.g. pasta, flour and so on from the cheaper alternatives.
This suggests, that it isn't the supermarkets that will lose out, but restuarants. On the contrary, they will do quite nicely thank you very much, which is another blow for the independents.
It's also problematic in terms of brand loyalty. It's quite interesting that people are still shopping at Waitrose but then going onto Sainsbury's.
But I can't imagine them visiting Lidl.

So all those people I saw in Lidl yesterday are imaginary?!
Maybe I'm imaginary too?
No, I was stating (perhaps uncritically) that I couldn't imagine people who shop at Waitrose shopping at Lidl. Some may do, but I would presume only a very small percentage given Lidl's socio-demographic profile, the 'quality' of many of the foods on offer, the shopping experience and locations of Lidl stores.
Ah, perhaps I was mizzled by the repetition of "people".
In my area of Bristol I often go in Aldi and then Tescos and see exactly the same people in one after the other shop.
Funny how you do actually see some quite posh looking / sounding people in Lidl and Aldi - although they do sometimes look a bit furtive mind you ;-)
I reckon the quality in both Aldi and Lidl is fantastic. The reasons they're cheaper than other supermarkets are mainly a) smaller number of lines (but let's face it the vast range of "choice" in large supermarkets is grotesque and bewildering, imo) and b) they have far fewer staff than other supermarkets (although they are smarter, better trained and can work a lot faster) meaning lower wages costs and queues can sometimes be longer.
Usual authorial disclaimers apply.
